Hemoglobinopathies

The gene carriers of sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies come from countries where malaria is (or has been) endemic, such as Central Africa, Asia, Arabia, South and Middle America. The heterozygote or carrier gene offers protection for malaria.

One should be aware of the higher frequency of people carrying the hemoglobinopathy trait coming from these countries.
